Abo, Archaeological site in Mountainair, New Mexico, US

Abo is an archaeological site in Mountainair, New Mexico, with stone structures and foundations spread across an elevated area. The location shows the remains of a settlement that includes a mission church and pueblo sections from different periods of occupation.

The settlement of Abo was founded in the 14th century and grew into an important trading center between different peoples. Spanish colonists later built a mission church at the site to spread Christianity.

The name Abo refers to the Tompiro-speaking people who settled here and shaped the land for their way of life. Visitors can still see how residents used this location as a hub for their daily trade and connections with distant groups.

The site is easy to explore on foot with a visitor center and two marked walking paths through different sections of the ruins. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for sunny, open terrain.

The location near salt deposits made Abo an oasis for trade and exchange in an otherwise harsh high-altitude region. This natural resource was key to the settlement's economic power and drew people from near and far.
