Capilla Peak Observatory, University astronomical observatory in Manzano Mountains, New Mexico.
Capilla Peak Observatory is a research facility operated by the University of New Mexico in the Manzano Mountains at approximately 9,300 feet elevation. The site housed a 24-inch Cassegrain reflecting telescope and served as a working station for sky observation.
The facility was founded by the University of New Mexico in 1947 and operated continuously for decades. The telescope mirror was removed in 2016, marking the end of active observations at the site.
The observatory facilitated numerous scientific publications and research projects in cosmology, cosmic radiation, radio astronomy, and supernova physics during its operation.
The site is located roughly 50 kilometers southeast of Albuquerque in a mountain region with cool climate conditions. Reaching it requires traveling to higher elevations where conditions for observation are better.
The telescope was equipped with advanced digital sensors that allowed electronic capture of astronomical data. This was cutting-edge technology for its era and contributed to major scientific discoveries.
