The 2021 Rust shooting incident is a fatal work accident that happened on the set of the western film 'Rust' in Santa Fe County, New Mexico. A revolver used as a prop discharged a live round, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.
On October 21, 2021, assistant director Dave Halls handed the revolver to Alec Baldwin, who fired it during a rehearsal. Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was later convicted of manslaughter, while charges against Baldwin were dismissed due to evidence issues.
The filming took place at a small western-style set called Bonanza City, in New Mexico. The case sparked an ongoing debate in the film industry about whether real guns on set should be replaced with digital effects.
