San Miguel Mission, Spanish colonial mission church in Santa Fe, United States
San Miguel Mission is a Spanish colonial mission station in Santa Fe, built from sun-dried adobe bricks with thick walls and a flat roof. The rectangular floor plan leads to an altar area, above which rises a three-tiered bell tower with wooden beams and bells.
Mexican settlers founded the chapel in the early 17th century as a place of worship for laborers and craftsmen in the colony. After destruction during the Pueblo uprising in the late 17th century, Spanish colonists rebuilt the structure in the early 18th century.
The name honors the archangel Michael, venerated in Roman Catholic tradition as a protector of the church. Wooden carvings near the altar display Latin inscriptions and religious scenes that artisans from Mexico created in the early 18th century.
The chapel sits on Old Santa Fe Trail south of the downtown plaza, accessible on foot from the city center. Visitors should note that the interior remains closed for touring on Sundays during Mass.
Beneath the altar foundation, archaeologists in the mid-20th century found pottery shards and jewelry that document burial practices from the early colonial period. These findings now rest in collections and offer insight into the ways of life among the first inhabitants.

Santa Fe contains a concentrated collection of historic sites and cultural institutions that reflect the layered history of New Mexico. The city combines Spanish colonial architecture, Native American heritage, and contemporary art across its museums, galleries, and religious buildings. The New Mexico History Museum and the Palace of the Governors document over four centuries of regional history, while San Miguel Chapel and the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi rank among the oldest continuously used church structures in the region. The museum landscape ranges from the Museum of International Folk Art, with its extensive collections of traditional crafts, to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum dedicated to the American modernist. The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian present the artistic traditions of Pueblo peoples and other indigenous groups of the Southwest. Canyon Road concentrates numerous galleries along a historic street, while venues like Meow Wolf Santa Fe and SITE Santa Fe focus on contemporary and experimental art forms. Outdoor recreation is available through the Santa Fe National Forest, Dale Ball Trails, and Atalaya Mountain Trail in the surrounding mountains.
