Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, Roman Catholic cathedral in Santa Fe, United States
The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi is a Catholic cathedral in Santa Fe, New Mexico, built in Romanesque Revival style with two square towers. Its stone walls, rounded arches, and symmetrical facade stand out from the adobe architecture that dominates the surrounding old town.
Archbishop Jean Baptiste Lamy began construction in 1869 on the site of an older adobe church from the 17th century. The earlier building had been destroyed during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and later rebuilt.
This building is named after Saint Francis of Assisi and serves as the central place for Mass and prayer for Santa Fe's Catholic community. The statue known as La Conquistadora is carried by worshippers during special occasions and processions through the streets of the city.
The church opens daily from 8:30 AM to 5:45 PM and offers guided tours as well as regular services. It is located on Cathedral Place in downtown Santa Fe, just a few minutes on foot from the Plaza.
The north chapel preserves parts of the original parish church, including thick adobe walls that remain visible today alongside the limestone structure. This older section offers a direct look at the earlier Spanish colonial architecture of Santa Fe.
