Don Diego de Vargas Zapata Luján Ponce de León, El Marques de la Nava de Barcinas, Bronze statue at Cathedral Park in Santa Fe, United States

The statue features a full-length representation of Diego de Vargas wearing fur-lined garments with a spear, cap, and saber at Cathedral Park.

Created by sculptor Donna Quasthoff in 2007, the statue depicts the Spanish conquistador who led the reclamation of Santa Fe after the Pueblo Revolt.

The bronze figure stands as a representation of Spanish heritage in New Mexico, with details based on an original portrait painting from Spain.

The statue is currently displayed at the New Mexico History Museum, offering visitors an opportunity to examine Spanish colonial influence in Santa Fe.

Following removal from Cathedral Park in 2020, the statue sparked discussions when it was discovered in a private residence backyard instead of city storage.
