Crestone, Spiritual town in Saguache County, Colorado, United States.
Crestone is a town in Saguache County in Colorado in the United States, sitting at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at an elevation near 7,920 feet (2,415 meters). Its streets are mostly unpaved and branch toward religious centers scattered across the surrounding land.
George Adams founded the town in 1880 as a mining camp focused on extracting silver and gold from the surrounding mountains. Beginning in the 1970s, spiritual communities moved here and transformed the settlement into a center for retreat practices.
Visitors walk between meditation centers or join teachings offered by resident monastics throughout the year. Some travelers spend weeks here, moving quietly along dirt roads that connect different retreat spaces.
Reaching the town requires driving along unpaved roads that can become difficult to navigate during rain or snow. Trails leading into the mountains begin outside the settlement and climb through open terrain toward alpine zones.
Despite its small resident count, the settlement brings together members of different religious traditions within a few square miles. The high elevation produces sharp star-filled nights often observed by visitors during evening walks.
