Penitente Canyon, Rock climbing canyon in San Luis Valley, Colorado.
The canyon features vertical walls of volcanic rock formations with nearly 300 technical climbing routes spread across its surface.
During the 1880s, Los Hermanos Penitentes, a religious brotherhood, established their presence in the canyon for spiritual practices and ceremonies.
Ancient pictographs on the canyon walls and a painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe reflect the intersection of Native American and Spanish colonial influences.
Visitors can access the canyon via County Road G from Highway 285, traveling west for 6 miles to La Garita and following County Road 38A.
The south-facing orientation of the climbing routes allows year-round access, while La Garita Creek provides opportunities for trout fishing.
