Crystal, Ghost town in Gunnison County, Colorado.
Crystal is an abandoned mining settlement in Gunnison County situated at 8,950 feet (2,725 m) elevation along the Crystal River. The town sits surrounded by the steep slopes of the Elk Mountains and retains scattered structures from its nineteenth-century development.
The settlement was founded in 1881 as a mining camp and reached about 500 residents during the mid-1880s at its peak. The decline came as silver mining became less profitable and the community gradually emptied.
The town served as a gathering hub for miners who frequented its hotels, saloons, and the Crystal Club to socialize. These spaces reveal how the community lived and spent time together away from work.
The settlement is accessible only by high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, best approached via County Road 3 from Marble. Travel here is demanding and should only be attempted in good weather since the route is unpaved and mountainous.
The mill building from 1893 sits on a rocky outcrop above the Crystal River and was engineered to power the mining operations. Few visitors realize this striking structure was originally built to grind ore for processing.
