Area code 970, Telephone prefix in Western Colorado, US
This telephone prefix covers western Colorado and reaches across more than 31 counties, from the Wyoming border down to the Utah line. It connects mountain regions, university towns, and farming areas throughout the western half of the state.
The prefix came into service on April 2nd of 1995, when the western part of the state received its own code and separated from Denver. This split created a geographic boundary between urban and rural telephone networks in Colorado.
The code region includes Winter Park, Vail, and Aspen resorts, which attract international visitors for winter sports and summer mountain activities.
Since October of 2021, callers must dial all ten digits when reaching a number within this prefix. This change prepares for the introduction of a second area code, expected around the year 2026.
The 970 area serves the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline through dedicated numbers in the Fort Collins exchange using the 988 central office code.
