Dawes County, County administration center in northwestern Nebraska, United States

Dawes County encompasses 1,401 square miles of land with rolling plains, pine forests, and grasslands across the northern border of Nebraska.

The county separated from Sioux County in 1885 and received its name from James W. Dawes, the sixth governor of Nebraska.

Native American heritage remains present through the historical territories of Oglala and Brule tribes who inhabited the region before European settlement.

Residents access county services, including courts, land management, and administrative offices through the headquarters in the city of Chadron.

The county maintains both Mountain Time observation and the number 69 prefix in Nebraska license plates due to its western location.
