Ontario State Recreation Site, State recreation area on Snake River banks in Malheur County, Oregon.
Ontario State Recreation Site is a public recreation area with open grass areas, updated facilities, and large cottonwood trees lining the western bank of Snake River north of Ontario. The grounds spread along the water with ample space for picnicking, walking, and fishing throughout the property.
The land was purchased by Oregon Parks and Recreation Department through multiple transactions between 1965 and 1969. These acquisitions created the foundation for this public recreation area that has served the local community since then.
The site serves as a wildlife watching location where visitors commonly observe herons, river otters, and muskrats in their natural surroundings. Groups of people gather along the riverbank to document birds and mammals with binoculars and cameras.
The site welcomes day-use visitors year-round with seasonal restroom facilities and portable toilets available. Boat launch areas and designated picnic zones are ready to use, and the access road is easy to navigate.
In early morning hours when mist blankets the Snake River, visitors can spot deer grazing on a nearby island. This quiet wildlife sight is often missed by those who visit later in the day.
