Farewell Bend State Recreation Area, State recreation area near Snake River in Ontario, Oregon
Farewell Bend sits along the Brownlee Reservoir of the Snake River with open grasslands, rocky slopes, and scattered cottonwoods framing the water. The area stretches over terrain suitable for camping, boating, and hiking during most of the year.
The location served as a stopping point for Oregon Trail travelers who followed the river for weeks before reaching this bend. Tensions between settlers and Snake River Shoshone people came to a head here during the gold rush period.
The crosses along Highway 30 mark historical tensions between indigenous peoples and settlers. They serve as reminders of the struggles that defined this part of the Snake River valley.
The grounds offer more than 90 developed campsites with power and water, tent camping areas, a couple of cabin rentals, and boat launching facilities. Shower buildings and restrooms are spread throughout the park for visitor convenience.
Wildlife like pronghorn antelope and golden eagles roam freely across this semi-arid landscape, providing unexpected viewing chances during a recreation visit. The space also holds casual recreational activities like volleyball and horseshoe tournaments that visitors often overlook.
