Oregon Territory, Former U.S. administrative territory in Pacific Northwest region, United States.

Oregon Territory was a United States administrative region in the Pacific Northwest, stretching from the ocean to the Rockies. This area covered present-day Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and portions of Montana and Wyoming.

Congress created this territory in 1848 following negotiations with Great Britain that ended decades of international disputes. It lasted until 1859, when Oregon achieved statehood and Washington Territory was split off.

Before formal recognition, many settlers called this region simply "the Oregon," a name whose origin remains unclear to this day. Early administrative structures grew from provisional meetings in mission stations and trading posts, where settlers discussed common matters.

The capital shifted locations several times, first from Oregon City to Salem, then to Corvallis, and finally back to Salem. Visitors interested in this period can find historical documents and exhibits in museums across these towns.

Four nations originally laid claim to this land: Spain, Great Britain, Russia, and the United States, each with separate trade and exploration interests. At one point, proposals suggested organizing it as an independent republic outside any national control.
