Rattlesnake Wilderness is a protected mountain area north of Missoula featuring thick forests, grassy alpine slopes, and many mountain lakes scattered throughout. The landscape is carved by steep valleys and numerous small creeks that drop dramatically in several places along the terrain.
Congress officially protected this wilderness in 1980 as part of Lolo National Forest under federal conservation law. The designation followed standards established by the Wilderness Act, which aimed to preserve undeveloped lands across the nation.
The Salish people held this land sacred for spiritual practices and ceremonial gatherings long before it became protected. Walking through these mountains, you can sense the deep connection between the landscape and those who lived here.
The area sits about 4 miles north of Missoula with well-marked hiking trails, designated camping zones, and fishing opportunities throughout. Camping is allowed only at least 3 miles from the main trailhead to protect the landscape.
The U-shaped valley floor was carved by ancient glaciers and feeds over 50 small creeks born from springs and snowmelt throughout the year. This abundance of water sources creates numerous waterfalls tucked into valleys that you stumble upon while hiking.
