Blackfoot Glacier

Blackfoot Glacier is an expanse of ice in Glacier National Park that sits beneath Blackfoot Mountain with visible crevasses and layered ice formations. The surface bears the marks of slow movement and constant melt, creating a dynamic frozen landscape.

The glacier was first documented in 1850 as a much larger formation than it is today. Over time it separated from the neighboring Jackson Glacier as ongoing ice loss reshaped the landscape.

The glacier bears the name of the Blackfoot Native American tribe, who inhabited the Montana territories before the establishment of the national park.

Reaching the glacier involves a long hike on mountain trails with uneven terrain and possible snow fields. Visitors should come prepared with sturdy footwear, climbing experience, and readiness for steep alpine conditions.

The ice reveals layers within it that record different periods of snowfall and melting across hundreds of years. These natural bands serve as an archive for scientists studying the climate history of this mountain region.
