Lake Ellen Wilson Campground

Lake Ellen Wilson Campground is a wilderness campsite located in a remote mountain valley surrounded by steep peaks, waterfalls, and thick coniferous forests at about 5000 feet elevation. The location is accessible only on foot and provides only basic facilities.

This campground was established in Glacier Park after mid-20th-century laws created wilderness protection designations. These legal changes allowed large areas to be set aside for undeveloped landscape.

The campground preserves traditional camping methods, requiring visitors to carry their supplies and practice wilderness skills without modern infrastructure or facilities.

Visitors need to obtain permits and bring bear-resistant food containers for storage. Access is on foot only, with a limited season and basic setup lacking modern conveniences like running water or electricity.

This site uses research-based design with cooking areas positioned away from sleeping zones to reduce grizzly bear encounters. This layout strategy differs from many other wilderness camping setups.
