Avalanche Lake, Mountain lake in Glacier National Park, Montana.
Avalanche Lake is a mountain lake in Glacier National Park that sits at the base of vertical cliffs with multiple waterfalls dropping directly into its waters. The basin is surrounded by towering peaks that create an enclosed, dramatic setting for the lake.
Dr. Lyman Sperry named the area Avalanche Basin in 1895 after observing multiple snow slides during a scientific expedition. The name later became established for the entire region and the valley leading to the lake.
The Trail of Cedars boardwalk leading to the lake represents an effort to make natural spaces accessible to visitors with mobility limitations.
The trail to the lake is moderately easy and passes through forest with some elevation gain along the way. A wooden boardwalk at the beginning accommodates visitors with mobility concerns, though the path becomes more natural and steeper after that section.
Sperry Glacier feeds several waterfalls that flow directly into the lake and remain visible throughout the year. This hidden glacier source creates continuous water flow that keeps the lake clear and cold.
