Mount Vaught, Mountain summit in Glacier National Park, Montana, United States.
Mount Vaught is a summit in the Livingston Range within Glacier National Park, standing at 8,850 feet. It sits roughly three miles north of Lake McDonald's inlet and forms part of a ridge connecting to neighboring peaks.
Lawrence O. Vaught, an Illinois attorney, was instrumental in establishing Glacier National Park through negotiations in the late 1880s. The summit was later named in his honor to recognize his role in creating this protected landscape.
The peak was known to the Kootenai as 'Big Old Man' before receiving its current name to honor L.O. Vaught. This change in naming reflects how European settlement reshaped the region's landscape and place names.
The hike to the summit is demanding and requires sturdy boots and weather-appropriate gear, as conditions can change rapidly. Starting early in the day and carrying plenty of water is essential, especially during warm periods.
The peak is part of a four-summit ridge that includes Stanton Mountain, McPartland Mountain, and Heaven's Peak. This rare arrangement of connected heights creates a memorable sequence that hikers can explore along the ridge system.
