Hart House, Heritage house in Patterson Heights, Calgary, Canada
Hart House is a heritage home and municipal historic site in Patterson Heights, Calgary, Canada, offering around 520 square meters of living space across two floors. The property features multiple rooms with four fireplaces and stands near the Bow River.
Edward Crandell commissioned the construction in 1905 in Victorian and Edwardian styles, which later served as an orphanage for soldiers' children from 1920 onward. A family acquired the property in the mid-20th century and used it for athletic purposes.
The owners bought the building in 1951 and set up a wrestling school in the basement that drew athletes from several countries. Visitors recognize the red brick and tall windows that give the house its characteristic look.
Major restoration work after 2012 added modern facilities while keeping the original architectural features from the early 1900s. Those wishing to visit should check ahead for opening times, as it remains a private property.
The basement held a wrestling training room where later well-known athletes like Bret Hart, Owen Hart, Chris Jericho and Davey Boy Smith learned their craft. Many international athletes came here to be coached by experienced instructors.
