The Military Museums, Military museum in Calgary, Canada
The Military Museums is a museum campus in Calgary, Alberta, made up of three separate branch museums, each dedicated to a different branch of the Canadian armed forces. The campus also holds a military art gallery and an archive, where documents, photographs, and maps are kept alongside the main collections.
The campus opened in 1990 and was built by bringing together several older collections that had previously been kept at different sites around Calgary. Over the years, the site expanded to house growing collections from conflicts stretching from the late 1800s to more recent peacekeeping operations.
The museums display uniforms, personal belongings, and equipment that once belonged to soldiers from different eras, giving visitors a direct sense of what military life was like. The naval history section is especially detailed, showing how Canadian sailors lived and worked at sea.
The campus is located in southwest Calgary and is easy to reach by car, with free parking available on site. Since the three museums, gallery, and archive together cover a lot of ground, it is worth setting aside at least half a day for a visit.
Two hangars on the grounds hold actual military aircraft, including a CF-18 Hornet and an F-86 Sabre Jet, which visitors can walk right up to. Standing next to both machines makes the change in scale and technology between two generations of fighter jets immediately obvious.
