Heritage Park Historical Village, Open-air museum in Calgary, Canada
Heritage Park Historical Village is an open-air museum in Calgary featuring over 200 buildings and settings that portray daily life in Western Canada from 1860 through 1950. The grounds include old schoolhouses, homes, workshops, stores, and other structures moved from their original locations to form a complete walkable settlement.
The site opened in 1964 when authentic buildings from various locations across Alberta were gathered and relocated to preserve the region's heritage. The structures span generations of settlement, showing how daily life evolved from early pioneer times through the early 20th century.
Staff in period dress perform daily tasks and trades throughout the reconstructed settlement, showing how ordinary people spent their time. You can watch blacksmiths, farmers, and merchants working with authentic methods and tools from that era.
The site covers large grounds best explored on foot, though a trolley and steam train operate around the perimeter. Wear comfortable shoes since there is considerable walking between buildings, and bring layers as weather can shift throughout the day.
A working steam locomotive runs regularly on dedicated tracks, offering visitors a different vantage point to view the buildings and grounds. The engine itself is a railway relic that adds to the genuine character of the place and provides a rarely experienced mode of travel.
