Gros Ventre Wilderness, Nature reserve in Sublette County, United States
Gros Ventre Wilderness is a large protected area within the mountains that encompasses forests, alpine lakes, and a major river flowing through the valleys. The terrain shows diverse landscapes with mountain ranges, meadows, and water features spread across a vast expanse.
The region served as hunting grounds for Native peoples for thousands of years before becoming part of the national forest system. A massive landslide in the early 1900s reshaped the landscape dramatically and left visible marks that remain obvious today.
Native peoples hunted across this land for thousands of years, and you can still find traces of their presence in the form of vision sites and old shelters scattered throughout. These marks show how deeply connected communities were to this territory.
The area has multiple entry points and trails suited for different fitness levels and abilities, whether you want a short walk or a long trek. You should prepare for changing weather and alpine conditions, especially in the higher elevations.
The area contains one of North America's largest concentrations of landslides, making it an unusual place to study how mountains change over time. It also serves as critical birthing grounds for one of the region's largest elk herds.
