Sublette County, Administrative division in Wyoming, US
Sublette County is an administrative division in western Wyoming that spans mountainous terrain with forests, ranges, and open valleys. The region includes several communities and encompasses both public lands and private properties spread across its landscape.
Sublette County was established in 1921 when the Wyoming State Legislature divided land from neighboring counties to create a new administrative region. The formation followed the growth of settlements in western Wyoming and the need for local governance.
The Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale maintains exhibits documenting the regional fur trade history and the legacy of William Lewis Sublette.
Pinedale serves as the administrative center and is the largest community, where most local services are located. Visitors should keep in mind that the region is sparsely populated and distances between communities can be substantial.
The selection of the county seat in 1921 resulted in Pinedale winning by only six votes over Big Piney, following an election with 1,139 votes supporting county formation.
