The New Gallery, Artist-run centre in Calgary, Canada

The New Gallery is an artist-run contemporary art space in Calgary that showcases experimental and innovative work. The venue hosts rotating exhibitions, educational workshops, and community programs designed to support creative exploration outside mainstream art markets.

The space began in 1974 as Clouds 'n' Water Gallery and underwent name changes that reflected shifts in its artistic direction over the following decades. By 1987 it became The New Gallery, marking a turning point in how the organization positioned itself within Calgary's art scene.

The gallery's name changed with each move: Clouds 'n' Water Gallery until 1980, then Off Centre Centre, and The New Gallery from 1987. It is known for fostering the production and trade of Artist Trading Cards, small original works that artists make and swap. Exhibiting artists are paid CARFAC fees.

The gallery occupies the ground floor of a red brick building, entered through a central yellow door flanked by a glass window and a white door. Look for the white signboard reading "新画廊 THE NEW GALLERY" above the storefront. Programming is chosen by peer jury, so exhibitions change; confirm current hours before travelling.

The New Gallery is known for fostering the production and trade of Artist Trading Cards, small original works exchanged between artists. The gallery also gave rise to other Calgary organizations, among them EMMEDIA and the Mountain Standard Time Performative Arts Festival, which became an independent non-profit society in 2003.
