Olympic Plaza, Urban park in downtown Calgary, Canada
Olympic Plaza is an urban park in downtown Calgary, Alberta, featuring an outdoor stage, a shallow reflecting pond, and open paved areas with seating throughout. The park sits directly beside Calgary City Hall and is surrounded by office towers and the city's civic centre.
The plaza was built in 1988 to serve as the official medal ceremony venue during the Calgary Winter Olympics, where athletes received their awards in front of large crowds. After the Games ended, it was kept as a public space and gradually developed into the city's main outdoor gathering area.
The plaza is used year-round for concerts, festivals, and markets that draw both locals and visitors into the heart of the city. During warmer months, the outdoor stage becomes a focal point for free public performances that give the space a lively, social character.
The plaza is easy to reach on foot from most of downtown Calgary, and the City Hall CTrain station is right beside it. In winter, parts of the surface can be slippery, so wearing appropriate footwear makes exploring the area more comfortable.
The rink at the plaza is one of the few refrigerated outdoor skating surfaces in Calgary, which means the ice stays in good condition even when temperatures rise above freezing. This makes it one of the more dependable winter spots in the city centre when the weather turns mild.
