Calgary Municipal Building, Government building in downtown Calgary, Canada
The Calgary Municipal Building is a government building in downtown Calgary, Canada, with a triangular footprint and a facade made of aluminum and glass. Inside, a central atrium runs through twelve of the fourteen floors, connecting the different levels of the building.
Construction started in 1982 and the building opened in 1985, during a period of fast growth in Calgary. It was built to meet the expanding administrative needs of the city at that time.
The council chambers on the ground floor are open to the public, so visitors can sit in and watch city council meetings in person. The seating wraps around the council table in a semicircle, giving the room a direct and open feel.
The building sits on Macleod Trail Southeast and connects directly to Calgary's transit network, making it easy to reach without a car. The ground floor is open to visitors who want to attend council proceedings in person.
A time capsule was sealed inside the building when it was completed in 1985 and is not meant to be opened until 2084. It holds objects and documents from that period, making the building a container of the city's own memory.
