Hub Oil explosion, Industrial disaster site in Forest Lawn, Calgary, Canada.
Hub Oil was an oil recycling facility in Forest Lawn that processed used oil and converted it into base mineral oil for industrial and automotive use. The site underwent extensive environmental remediation after the incident to address contamination in the soil and groundwater.
The facility was founded in 1958 as Monarch Refinery when Jake Kalmacoff Jr. relocated from Saskatchewan to establish an oil recycling operation in Calgary. On August 9, 1999, an explosion occurred at the site, sending fireballs and debris across a significant radius in the Forest Lawn area.
The incident transformed local industrial safety regulations and remains a reference point for Calgary firefighters in emergency response training.
The site is on public land but sits within an active industrial area with limited public access to the interior. It is best explored from surrounding streets and nearby vantage points rather than entering the former facility grounds.
The facility processed approximately 15 million liters of used oil annually, making it one of the larger recycling operations in the region at the time. This volume demonstrates the scale of the operation and the industrial significance of the site before the disaster.
