Calgary Zoo, Wildlife park in Calgary, Canada
Calgary Zoo is a wildlife park on St. George's Island in Calgary, Alberta, covering 120 hectares (300 acres) with animals from multiple continents. The park divides into several geographic areas including African savannas, Asian rainforests, and North American habitats, each presenting a range of animal species.
Calgary Zoological Society opened a small animal collection in 1929 that grew over the decades into an internationally recognized facility for animal care and research. The site expanded and modernized several times, focusing on species conservation and educational programs.
The facility includes the Dorothy Harvie Botanical Gardens, displaying plant collections and seasonal exhibits that reflect regional horticultural traditions.
The grounds open daily from 9 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon, with wide paths for strollers and wheelchairs, plus wagons available for rent for families. The site offers shaded rest areas, and a visit typically takes several hours to see all exhibits.
An area called Prehistoric Park displays life-size dinosaur models among more than 100 plant species that mirror prehistoric vegetation. This section combines paleontology with living botany, giving a sense of what ancient landscapes might have looked like.
