Yellowstone Falls, Waterfall in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.
The Lower Falls cascade plunges 308 feet from the Yellowstone River into the Grand Canyon, making it the largest waterfall in the Rocky Mountains.
French fur trapper Baptiste Ducharme made the first documented European sighting of the falls in 1824, returning for additional visits in 1826 and 1839.
The Minnetaree Indians named the falls after the yellow-colored rocks at the river banks, which French trappers later translated as Yellowstone.
The Canyon loop road provides multiple viewing areas with parking spaces, including Inspiration Point, Grandview Point, Lookout Point, and Artists Point.
Water flow varies drastically between seasons, from 63,500 gallons per second during spring runoff to 5,000 gallons per second in autumn.
