The cemetery was established in 1878 by members of General George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry, shortly after the construction of Fort Meade military installation.
The cemetery contains graves of soldiers from different military campaigns, including Medal of Honor recipients from the Indian Wars of the American frontier period.
The cemetery grounds remain open for visitation from sunrise to sunset between April and October, with management handled by Black Hills National Cemetery staff.
An obelisk monument within the cemetery commemorates two 7th Cavalry soldiers who died during patrol duties in the frontier territories.
