Fort Peck Theater, Historic theater in Fort Peck, United States
Fort Peck Theater is a movie house built in Swiss chalet style with open-truss wood construction and handcrafted light fixtures throughout the interior. The auditorium seats about 1200 people and displays its original character through craftsmanship details from the building era.
The theater was built in 1934 as part of the Fort Peck Dam project to serve roughly 50000 workers of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and their families with entertainment. The construction site created a temporary community, and the building helped shape life during that intense building period.
The theater remains a gathering place for performances and concerts during the summer months. Visitors encounter local and traveling artists who shape the programming throughout the season.
The theater is accessible during its performance season from May through August when events are held regularly. It is wise to check ahead for scheduled shows and to secure seats in advance.
The light fixtures inside were made in workshops run by the Army Corps of Engineers, crafted specifically for the building during construction. These handmade fixtures stand as a quiet testimony to the resourcefulness of the workers at that massive job site.
