Interior Plains

The Interior Plains extend across central North America, stretching from the Gulf Coast to the Beaufort Sea along the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains.

The region formed between 2000 and 1800 million years ago when the Hearne-Rae, Superior, and Wyoming cratons merged to create the North American craton Laurentia.

Native American tribes developed farming and hunting practices adapted to the grasslands, establishing settlements throughout the vast plains before European colonization.

The region contains fertile soil supporting extensive agriculture, producing substantial quantities of wheat, corn, and other cereal crops throughout Canada and the United States.

During the late Cretaceous period, the Western Interior Seaway covered the plains from Alaska to the Gulf of Mexico, depositing marine sediments that enriched the soil.
