Cape Decision Light

Cape Decision Light is a concrete tower structure located at the southern tip of Kuiu Island, rising approximately 75 feet above the water's edge. The building contains operational equipment and guidance systems that help maritime traffic navigate the straits below.

The structure was constructed in 1932 following congressional approval and funding allocation for the project. It represented an advancement in lighthouse technology for the region during that era of maritime development.

The lighthouse stands as a vital maritime landmark that has guided vessels through these waters for nearly a century. The original Fresnel lens from the tower is now preserved and displayed in a nearby museum for visitors to see.

The location is accessible only by boat or helicopter since no road connects to the island. Visitors should prepare for coastal weather conditions and wear appropriate footwear and waterproof clothing.

A fire in 1989 damaged several structures on the property, requiring significant restoration work afterward. This incident highlights how vital it was to protect and maintain the infrastructure at this remote location.
