A pulp and paper company founded the settlement in 1906 and quickly developed it into the region's largest mill operation. The factory eventually closed, leaving the location nearly abandoned.
The Heiltsuk and Nuxalk peoples inhabited the coastal region for 9,000 years before European settlers arrived to establish industrial operations.
The location is reachable only by seaplane or boat, as there is no road connection to the mainland. Visitors should expect limited accommodations and services.
