Nisku, Industrial hamlet near Edmonton International Airport, Canada
Nisku is an industrial and business park stretching along the Queen Elizabeth II Highway with over 400 companies serving various industrial sectors. The area contains a large complex of businesses that supply services and products to the surrounding Edmonton region.
The area was established in 1972 by the Sparrow family and quickly became a major industrial hub for the surrounding region. What began as farmland was systematically transformed into a significant economic center.
The name comes from the Cree language and means "goose," honoring indigenous connections to the land that existed long before industrial development. This naming choice reflects how the region was once part of traditional indigenous territories.
The site sits between Edmonton and Leduc and is easily accessible via the main highway. Visitors should expect a large industrial and commercial area spread across a significant area that is best explored by vehicle.
Despite being a vast industrial and trade center with thousands of workers, the hamlet of Nisku itself is home to only about 30 permanent residents. This stark contrast reveals how the park functions as a workplace rather than a residential community.
