It was founded to document barbed wire and ranching heritage, and it holds what is thought to be the largest collection of published material on barbed wire, gathered from private collectors across the United States.

The museum's name comes from "Devil's Rope", the nickname ranchers gave barbed wire. Inside, exhibits of fencing tools and wire collections show how the material was used on the Texas plains, and a Route 66 display covers the highway's Texas stretch.
