The city emerged in 1901 after the Rock Island Railway built a rail line between Liberal, Kansas and Texhoma, Texas. This railroad development attracted early settlers and enabled growth of an agricultural settlement.
The annual Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo has taken place every May since 1933, bringing together contestants who compete for substantial prizes.
