Ada is a county seat in Pontotoc County in south-central Oklahoma. The town sits along Clear Boggy Creek and connects residential neighborhoods with commercial areas arranged along wide streets.
The settlement began in 1889 when the first postmaster opened a log store and named it after his daughter Ada Reed. The community grew quickly into a regional trading center for the surrounding agricultural areas.
East Central University, founded in 1909, serves 4,500 students through specialized programs including cartography and environmental health science with national recognition.
The regional airport sits at the eastern edge of town and offers connections for private and business travelers. Two main highways run through the area and provide direct links to neighboring communities in all directions.
The Chickasaw Nation operates its administrative headquarters in town and shapes the economy and public life considerably. Many residents work for the organization or visit its facilities for various services.
