Mennoville Mennonite Church, Religious building in El Reno, Oklahoma, United States.
Mennoville Mennonite Church is a religious building on a 2-acre property near El Reno that shows traditional Mennonite architectural principles from the 1890s period. The building later became part of the Canadian County Museum Complex and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The building was constructed in 1894 after the first Mennonite congregation in Oklahoma was established, with construction beginning in 1893. This happened shortly after the territory opened for settlement in 1889.
The church reflects the presence of Mennonites from Switzerland, Germany, and Russia who brought their faith practices to the Oklahoma frontier. Visitors can see how the community expressed its beliefs through the building itself.
The site is located near El Reno and is now part of a museum complex where visitors can explore the historic church. Plan enough time to walk around the grounds and view the building architecture up close.
The original congregation started in 1893 with twenty-seven founding members who built the structure. It was the southernmost Mennonite settlement along the historic Chisholm Trail.
