First Baptist Church, Protestant church in downtown Muskogee, Oklahoma.
The First Baptist Church building features two asymmetrical crenelated towers, a steep gabled roof, and exterior walls made of two types of red brick.
Founded in 1876 by the Baptist Mission Board of Nashville, Tennessee, the church began as a mission school for Indians and freed individuals under N.A. Leslie.
This African-American congregation grew to 700 members in the 1920s, establishing itself as one of the largest Black Protestant churches in Oklahoma.
The church stands at the intersection of Denison Street and North 5th Street, with a historical marker positioned along the public sidewalk.
During the 1930s Great Depression, the church operated a soup kitchen to provide food for local residents experiencing financial hardship.
