USS Batfish, Attack submarine and museum ship in Muskogee, Oklahoma, United States
The USS Batfish is a Balao-class submarine now serving as a museum vessel at the Port of Muskegee in the state of Oklahoma, United States. The boat consists of several sections with torpedo tubes, diesel engines, and narrow passageways that visitors can walk through.
The submarine was launched in May 1943 and completed seven patrols in the Pacific from August that year to August 1945. After the war, it continued patrol duty until decommissioned in 1969 and later moved to Oklahoma.
The vessel takes its name from the batfish, a tropical fish found in warm ocean waters around the world. Visitors walk through crew quarters and torpedo rooms that show how sailors lived and worked beneath the surface.
The vessel sits on dry land next to the Arkansas River, so visitors can board without difficulty. Interior passages are narrow, and ladders connect different levels.
In February 1945, this boat sank three Japanese submarines within 76 hours in the South China Sea, a record in United States Navy history. The vessel is now one of the few remaining submarines of its class open to visitors.
