Muskogee, County seat in eastern Oklahoma, United States.
Muskogee is a town in eastern Oklahoma at the confluence of the Arkansas River, Verdigris River, and Grand River at about 184 meters (604 feet) elevation. The area holds several lakes and waterways that wind through residential and commercial zones.
The Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad founded the settlement in 1872 and named it after the Muskogee Creek people living in the region. Rail traffic brought traders and settlers into the area, which later became the administrative center of the county.
The Five Civilized Tribes Museum displays objects from the daily life of the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole inside a building from 1876. Visitors see clothing, tools, and documents that record how these five peoples lived during the nineteenth century.
The Port of Muskogee connects the town to the Gulf of Mexico through the Arkansas River and handles cargo traffic. Visitors can walk along the riverfront and watch the lock through which barges pass.
Honor Heights Park lies north of downtown and displays thousands of blooming azaleas in spring. During the annual festival in April, visitors come from across the state to walk along the colored paths between the flowers.
