Tifariti, Desert settlement in Es Semara Province, Western Sahara
Tifariti stands at 490 meters elevation in northeastern Western Sahara, surrounded by vast stretches of sand and rock formations near the Mauritanian border.
The settlement experienced severe damage in 1991 when the Royal Moroccan Air Force conducted extensive bombing raids, destroying medical facilities and administrative buildings.
The annual ARTifariti gathering brings international artists to this desert location, creating a platform for artistic expression within the Sahrawi community.
The settlement functions as the temporary capital of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and headquarters of the second military region since 2008.
The University of Tifariti, established in 2013, represents the first higher education institution in the territory controlled by the Sahrawi government.
