Tifariti

Tifariti is a settlement located at roughly 490 meters elevation in the northeastern desert of the region, surrounded by vast expanses of sand and rock formations. The place sits near the Mauritanian border and functions as an administrative center in this remote landscape.

The settlement suffered severe damage in 1991 when subjected to extensive aerial bombardment, which destroyed medical facilities and administrative buildings in the area. Despite this destruction, the place later became an important administrative center and has gradually regained significance for the local population.

The annual ARTifariti festival draws artists from around the world to this remote location, where they work alongside local residents on collaborative projects. The event has become an important meeting point for creative people to exchange ideas and create together in this desert setting.

The location is far from other settlements and requires careful planning for a visit, especially regarding water and supplies in this remote area. Extreme heat and harsh desert conditions are typical here, so bring appropriate clothing, sun protection, and prepare for challenging environmental circumstances.

A university was established here in 2013 and became the first higher education institution operated by the local government. This institution stands as a symbol of commitment to education and academic development in this isolated region.
