Oroluk, Marine sanctuary in Pohnpei State, Federated States of Micronesia
Oroluk is an atoll in Pohnpei State with a large lagoon surrounded by shallow waters and island areas. The formation includes sections of reef, open water, and land where people have established their settlement.
Spanish explorers encountered this atoll in the 1500s and recorded its location on their maps of the Pacific. The land remained largely isolated until people from Kolonia moved there to establish a permanent community.
The people living on Oroluk Island came from a specific area in Kolonia and grow bananas and taro using methods passed down through their families. Daily life centers on these traditional plants and the connection to the surrounding sea.
Supply boats arrive only several times per year, so reaching the atoll requires planning well ahead. The lack of frequent connections means life here operates on a slower pace with limited access to outside goods and services.
The atoll sits along migration routes for fish and marine creatures moving between different ocean regions of the Pacific. This location makes it a natural passageway where animal populations naturally mix and move through the waters.
