College of Micronesia-FSM, Land-grant university in Kolonia, Federated States of Micronesia
The College of Micronesia-FSM is a land-grant institution in Kolonia, the main town of Pohnpei, with branch campuses in Chuuk, Kosrae, and Yap. The Kolonia campus holds the main administration, library, and most academic programs, including a dedicated fisheries and maritime program.
The college was founded in 1978, shortly before the Federated States of Micronesia gained independence, to give local students access to higher education without leaving the region. It grew from an earlier community college that had operated under US administration during the Trust Territory period.
Students on the Kolonia campus come from all four states of the Federated States of Micronesia, bringing different languages and traditions with them. On any given day, several Micronesian languages can be heard across the grounds, shaping the daily life of the campus.
The main campus in Kolonia sits on the edge of town and is easiest to reach by vehicle. Most offices and facilities are open during daytime hours, so visitors with specific needs are best off checking in advance.
The college runs a marine research station where students work hands-on with pearl farming and sea cucumber processing, activities tied directly to the economy of surrounding islands. These projects were not part of the original curriculum but grew from the practical needs of local communities over time.
