Stóra Dímun, Remote island in Skúvoy Municipality, Faroe Islands
Stóra Dímun is an island in Skúvoy Municipality in the Faroe Islands marked by two prominent peaks, including Høgoyggj at 396 meters above sea level. A single farm occupies the southern side, and the island is accessible only by helicopter.
Settlement on this island dates back to the 13. century, when several families made their home here. Over time the population gradually declined, and now only two families remain as residents.
The farm on the southern slope maintains traditional sheep herding and produces local goods using methods passed down through generations. Life here follows patterns that have remained largely unchanged for centuries.
The island is reached only by helicopter, which operates twice each week throughout the year. Plan ahead by checking weather conditions, as flights can be affected by storms or poor visibility.
The island serves as a major nesting ground for multiple seabird species, with substantial populations of puffins and petrels breeding here each season. This role as a seabird sanctuary makes it a destination of interest for people studying or observing birds.
