Fossá

Fossá, Double-cascade waterfall in Sunda Municipality, Faroe Islands.

Fossá is a two-stage waterfall in Sunda Municipality that drops 140 meters from the uplands into the Sundini sound. The water plunges over steep rock faces, creating multiple cascades that flow most vigorously after heavy rain.

The name comes from Faroese, combining 'fossur' meaning waterfall with 'á' meaning river. This reflects how water shapes the landscape across the islands.

The waterfall represents the natural elements that shape daily life in the Faroe Islands, where numerous streams create similar water features.

You can view this waterfall from several spots, including from the nearby island of Eysturoy across the Sundini sound. The water flows strongest after rainy days, making those times ideal for seeing it at full force.

Water flow shifts dramatically between seasons, narrowing to a thin stream during dry spells and transforming into a powerful cascade after intense rainfall. This variation means each visit offers a different view depending on the weather pattern beforehand.
