Saint John Parish, Administrative parish on the western coast of Grenada
Saint John Parish is an administrative parish on the western coast of Grenada, with Gouyave as its main town and a working fishing harbor. The parish also has farmland and spice processing facilities, making it one of the more productive areas on the island.
Gouyave grew into a trading post during the colonial period, when the surrounding land was used for growing crops that were shipped across the Caribbean. After Grenada gained independence, the parish kept its role as a center for farming and fishing.
Every Friday night, Gouyave hosts a fish fry along the waterfront where fresh catch is cooked and served outdoors. The event draws locals and visitors together and gives a clear sense of how central fishing is to daily life here.
Gouyave sits along the main road that runs up the western coast and is easy to reach from Saint George's. Walking around the town center and the harbor takes little time, so it pairs well with a longer drive along the coast.
Gouyave is home to one of the few nutmeg processing stations in the Caribbean that is open for visitors to walk through. Inside, workers sort and process the whole nutmeg by hand, and the smell of the spice fills the air throughout the building.
