Alderney Society Museum

The Alderney Society Museum is a history museum in Saint Anne on this Channel Island, housed in a school building from 1790. The building was constructed by Governor Jean Le Mesurier and now contains five gallery spaces displaying collections on natural history, maritime topics, and rotating exhibitions.

The museum was founded in 1966 and initially housed in the basement of Island Hall before relocating to the former school building. The move allowed the collection to be displayed in larger, better-appointed spaces.

The museum displays the island's development from Stone Age times to the present day, with rare maps and documents that trace how people lived here across centuries. The exhibitions show how local events and traditions shaped the character of this small community.

The museum is open on weekdays during daytime hours and located in central Saint Anne, making it easy to reach on foot. It is a good idea to arrive in the morning when it tends to be less crowded.

The museum holds a copy of the 1940 Census document, an important record of the island during World War II. This document is particularly notable because it captures the population at a critical moment in the island's wartime experience.
